Novice refers to Exhibits which have not won first place competing singly at any Capital City Royal Show. Excluding Child's Classes.

Please refer to the RASV Horses in Action Special Regulations for a list of accepted performances.


Performances for each Exhibit nominated must be shown on the Nomination. (See Conditions).

An Exhibit cannot be entered in a special class unless it has been entered in an ordinary class in the same section.

Stallions are not eligible to compete in this section.

All Exhibits entered in this section must be registered with a recognized breed society, Show Horse Council of Australasia, Equestrian Australia or registered on the National Saddle Horse Register. All Exhibits must be microchipped.

Where height is stipulated, Exhibits must be measured at the Royal Melbourne Show or hold a current RASV or Show Horse Council of Australasia measuring certificate. An Exhibit measured at the Royal Melbourne Show which measures over or under the specified measurement will be transferred to its correct class where possible.

An Equestrienne is a lady rider 18 years and over.

Dress (excluding mounted turnouts)
Ladies (18 years and over):
(a) Approved safety helmet, Tweed, black or dark coat, stock, rat catcher collar or collar and tie, breeches and top boots; or
(b) Approved safety helmet, tweed, black or dark coat, stock, rat catcher collar or collar and tie, jodhpurs and jodhpur boots

Gentlemen:
(a) Approved safety helmet, Tweed, black or dark coat, stock, rat catcher collar or collar and tie, breeches and top boots; or
(b) Approved safety helmet, tweed, black or dark coat, stock, rat catcher collar or collar and tie, jodhpurs and jodhpur boots

Girls and boys (17 years and under):

Competing in Galloway and Hack Saddle Classes and Show Hunter Galloway and Show Hunter Hack classes (excluding Childs, riding, Junior and Intermediate Turnout classes) may wear top boots.

Saddlery
Ordinary snaffle (with or without a dropped nose band), a simple double bridle or ordinary pelham must be used. Numnahs shaped to fit the saddle neatly may be used in this section.
